What's "wrong" with the original film?
Oh, brother...
With the original properties already owned by the studio who's producing them, they are relatively cheap, proven products to produce and sell. The story is basically written...all one has to do is transpose it...or "update it"...whamo blamo...instant movie !
Considering that most people of this generation of movie goers aren't that sophisticated to even know the original is out there, and conditioned and wanting of the new superduper special movies EFX more than story, it doesn't take that much to sell it. It's like making instant oatmeal. The merchandising of ancillary rights is the icing on the cake !!!!
For the same reason that Psycho was remade in color ;-)
Marin County?
Oh lord! I don't remember if that priest had to show more than one or two facial expressions in The Wicker Man. If he did, this will be a real challenge for stonefaced Cage. On the other hand, he might be just perfect for playing an uptight priest.

Some time ago clark gave me the news of the Solaris remake, so it is only fair that we now stick THIS one to him.I bet it hurts, clark ol' boy...
I've heard Steven Seagal is gonna star in the "My Fair Lady" remake with Barry Manilow doing the vocals.
