Surprisingly....in many cases when someone wins Best Actor or Actress it has been all downhill since then. A good example is Marisa Tomei's surprise win for "My Cousin Vinny." After that she didn't have much success (although I thought she was fabulous in "The Perez Family"). However, her career is back on track (almost 10 years later) with "In the Bedroom." There are many other similar stories.
