DeNiro is my all time favorite because of the variety he plays...his latest stuff is obviously not his best...Crowe's career reminds me of the early DeNiro, I think this man is a very good actor who will be around for a long time...he has the on screen intensity I find appealing.
Follow Ups:
...especially from down under, like Proof (with Hugo Weaving) and Romper Stomper. I thought he was something special in LA Confidential and The Insider. The overrated A Beautiful Mind owes what vitality it possesses to his performance. Kevin Costner only wishes he had this kinda talent.However. Russ the Wuss has a chip on his shoulder the size of New Zealand, and it doesn't look to be getting smaller any time soon. Just ask the BBC producer of the BAFTAs. Crowe's trying his hand at directing next. He has a ton of potential. We'll see if he squanders it on tacky action fare like Proof of Life, or if he's more serious about the work than the star trip. Time will tell.
Viktor might be right but only time will tell...I've liked Big Bob in Heat and Ronin as recent films....I also thought he was terrific in Analyze This. Like Mike's post, I wonder what Crowe seems so pissed about....like he's got a chip on his shoulder...the lightest movie I've seen him in is Mystery Alaska, a small film I enjoyed greatly.
Here's this guy...he's making great money...got plenty of WHATEVER he wants...and he acts like he doesnt want it.He's not the first to play this game. Some of them had their own demons but some of them were just spoiled brats. Cant figure out guys like him who've seem like they've got it all.
He needs to make 4 or 5 REALLY memorable films and then act in crappy ones for the rest of his life and he'll be all set. I don't think DeNiro made a flick in the last 20 years even close to the ones he did in the 70s.
I don't think so. I think he will be rightly delegated to the dumb star status of Harrison Ford/Kevin Costner in just five years or so. Making more money from film to film, looking dumber and dumber.
Yeah. What Crowe needs is a few really good films to boost his stature. DeNiro had Martin Scorcese and "Mean Streets" and "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull." Crowe has not been in a picture nearly as good as those.I'd say Crowe is very good but not yet in De Niro's (or Pacino's) class.
I'll disagree. You're probably just singling out his American movies...he's made more in Australia. Plus, his role in The Insider was the most Oscar-worthy role he's done.Doug Schneider
Loved his performance in "The Insider"...but Crowe has to harness all of that negative, thug energy he has in real life and divert it towards his craft, then maybe he has a shot...but in real life, he is too angry about something that still he still has to resolve. Dont know what it is...but he better do it fast. What's that word...oh yeah...Maturity. He hasn't got it yet. He may not ever get it. He seems to think being rude, is cooooooool. Maybe in the outback on a Saturday night he's cool...but all of the Armani tuxedo's in the world, won't help him attain it in The Real World.
He needs to get the stuffing kicked out of him...either psychically or physically. Perhaps some prolonged unemployment would cure that.
Until he "gets it"...all of the good parts that he gets will be for nothing. He will be stuck with the reputation of being a Big Bore and A Pain In The Neck, and that will eclipse ALL of the talent he has as an actor. It wont matter how good he is. Whatever that is.
What a waste, huh ?
