Never saw it, too many professional song and dance people around to make me throw money at people acting like song and dance folks. I heard it was a good one, not a big deal for me, I looked a goosling, in contrast with the great fred astare, and couldn't work up a lot of go power.
I would remind those who viewed aviator outside of a theatre projection, it was mostly a visual entertainment. To exaggerate my point, i wouldn't slip in a CD of the indy 500 and say I had been at the race. I have seen a reproduction of the story part of the experience .
Follow Ups:
Used sparingly IMO, to heighten the love intensity and close connection within the couple. Gosling was portrayed as jazz musician, so there is a lot of music, but not basically a musical.
Billy said it well: they pull you into their love circle, then tear your heart out in the end as they each commit relational suicide. It wasn't circumstances-- it was choice.
No wonder the Academy didn't give them best picture. People walked out of theaters hurting.
The emotional strength generated speaks to how good this film is, but it still sucks. I won't bother a second time.
