I have found an old PA5800 brand new in the box at a local retailer. What would be a fair price for this amplifier? Any comments?

Well it looks like the poor thing has been marked down to $219. Tempting, but I could put that money towards a decent DD receiver. It just seems like such a good deal.
You are not going to find a better amp for that money. I owned one when J&R was selling for $299 and it served well. It is going to be superior to any receiver you are going to find in that price range.
Ha! now this thing is down to $189....
waiting, waiting...
buy it or what?
The last I heard stores like J&R (and 6th Ave?) were moving them for $300 US. Originally these sold for $999 US. I think you should be able to pick it up for under $500. I purchased mine for a higher price (about $450 US) because I live in Canada and didn't want to have to worry about issues with duty, warranty, and delayed gratification. Start your negotiations at $300 (maybe a little less) given that the model is discontinued and that you saw it being sold at J&R for this price. Good luck.
