In Reply to: Is there a VCR that has S-Video outputs? posted by Paul in Sterling on March 03, 2002 at 11:09:01:
Ordinary VHS recorders operate in composite mode only.S-video output is useless unless you are playing an S-VHS recorded tape on an S-VHS recorder. Note that S-VHS recorders also can record on standard VHS tapes BUT the output can only be composite.
So, unless you have s-VHS recorded tapes, or intend to make them, forget about s-video from VCRs.
We use S-VHS recorders to make recordings on higher quality standard tapes and get excellent results as these recorders contain more sophisticated video circuitry. But the output is only composite.

No matter what your source is (Standard or S-VHS) it outputs via the S-Video hook-up...and does a pretty nice job at that!Sam
Now I presume your JVC recorder is an S-VHS, right?Ok, if you play an S-VHS recorded tape you will get true s-video (split) output. But if you play a standard VHS tape, it is still only a composite signal coming out of those S-video sockets. It just cannot be anything else!!!
