Costco here in Hawaii has the Sharp DV-600U on sale for $199. Has anyone has experience with this unit? Actually, since I am in the market for a CD player, this appears to be a reasonable candidate. However, I know that while some DVD players make fine cd players (e.g. Pioneer 414, as per The Absolute Sound), others are poor in their cd playback quality. Also, mechanical/electronic problems can totally overshadow a machines other positive traits. I would be using the unit for DVD playback and possibly as a transport for an MSB Dac.
Thanks for any help or advice.
I bought one at Costco for $269 this past summer in Portland OR. I don't have a TV set yet with component inputs, so I just use the composit video jack on the back of the TV.It knocks the socks off the VHS tapes I've been getting from the local blockbuster, but I'm not really using the full potential of the signal, since I don't even have an S-Video TV...
The player itself has an annoying parent control feature that I can't ever seem to override, and the manual is translated poorly. Once up and running it seems to work pretty well with an occasional freeze frame (usually late into the movie sor some reason). The remote is not all that great when trying to use the extra features (like viewing the trailer, or interview with the the movie's director etc). Since this is the only DVD I've ever used, I may be complaining about something inherant to the format...
One thing to note though, I was in my local stereo store today looking for a new TV (the Sony Wega XBR or the digital Panasonic CT32XF55) and the saleman said that progressive scan DVD players are about to hit the shelves (progressive scanning like on a PC's DVD) which requires a Digital TV, but it's something to think about. For $199, though, you can't beat it.
