I am interested in adding ht to my 2 channel system and I currently have separate pramp, xover and two power amps for subs/satelites. Has anyone out there heard the Adcom GTP760 or GTP830 pre/pros in 2 channel mode? I don't want to give up 2 channel performance by adding ht to my system. TIA

of adding Home Theatre. But the question is what are you using for a preamp at this time? If you can get a Technics SH500 and an Adcom GSA700 (3 channel amp with built in pre), you can use your 2 channel system without being affected by the HT.
I presently use an Adcom GFP-555 and also have a GSP560 processor w/3 amps. Only gives me pro-logic though. I'm looking for 5.1, etc. I have plenty of power amps around so a new digital pre/pro sounds like what I need. Just haven't heard them in good old "stereo". Most of my listening is in 2 channel. Thanks
I would go with an Outlaw pre/processor. It is inexpensive and they tend to build good quality components. To tell the turth, I find that most of the movies I like are not in 5.1 or if they are have so much dialogue that you end up listening only to the centre channel. In that case I tend to switch to stereo and it sounds better. My main speakers are well set up, so I have a good soundstage. In the end, I think surround is overblown and somewhat disappointing on all but action/adventure flicks.
It's a long story, but I "chopped" up a gsp560, and ended up with just the 3 channels of amplification. The rear channels only use a pair of output devices , the center channel amp has 4 output devices and a separate power supply. I just don't know what the specs(watts, distortion, bandwidth) on them are though...Samoh yeah, I intend to install an active xover inside the chassis, for driving full range speakers using the "rear" channels, and a mono subwoofer from the "center" amp.
Sam,I don't remember rating of amps but I'll did out the manual and post a follow up message. By the way; Great idea! I'm not wild about the prologic so why not utilize just the amps! Good thinking. Are you using a preamp w/processing?
Fred
that is a minimalist HT unit. Takes the audio from the dish, and does the prologic processing and amplification to drive the five speakers and subwoofer directly. Came with 5 inch high "monitors" which have recently been upgraded to dual 15's and horns for the left/right fronts, single 15's and horns for the rear surrounds and center channel. Still thinking about my subwoofer options, but I have plenty of low end when the 7 15's are rumbling now...all speakers are 100dB/watt sensitivity...stunning dynamics. Samthe chopped down gsp560 only retains the power supply portion of the main circuit board. I used a dremel cutoff wheeel to cut away all the prologic section which was smashed when I got the unit. threw away the front circuit panel, etc. rewired the rear jacks to have three input channels, and retained the original binding posts and speaker outputs. I'm guessing maybe the dual channels(rears) will safely produce at least 30 watts, and the single amp(center) will do the same as a GFA535, 60 watts. Just about perfect for driving some full range single driver TQWT's, and a mono subwoofer with them. build quality of the gsp560 is way lower than my older adcom amps...Sam
I may be a lousy source, but I did have the GTP 750 for a while. I ahd nothing but trouble with it, and ended up selling it. As a 2 channel processor, it was OK at best. Adcom, at the time they were producing the 750, was playing catch-up with the rest of the marketplace, and the lack of quality showed. They may have suffiiently caught up with the 830, but I haven't been back to Adcom to check them out.Regarding 2 channel, I think what many have found it that home theater systems are great for home theater, and music systems are great for music, but finding one system that does both equally well is a challenge. HT speakers, for example, are designed to accomodate the riggors or producing movie soundtracks, not to capture the delicacies of recorded music.
Now all of that said, there are exceptions, but if cost is a factor, or space limitations don't allow for having 2 systems (one dedicated to music and one dedicated to HT), then you might find yourself making compromises.
