For you to get a picture your TV must be able to handle PAL as well as NTSC. Otherwise you will only get rubbish, be it composite or S video. Most TV sets here handle both systems but I gather this is not always the case in the USA.Also, be aware that some players which claim to handle both PAL & NTSC do a crude conversion to yield a very so so picture. However this does not apply to TV sets. If they claim to handle both (and often throw the Secam French system in for good measure) then they do it properly.
So, the composite output is a red herring. The problem is PAL & NTSC compatability. Both systems handle component, s video & composite BUT the resultant signal is either PAL or NTSC.

Unless you find a PAL compatible TV, your videos will not work in Canada. Finding a PAL tv in Toronto may be a challenge. I would suggest looking at some of the 220/240 volt stores that are listed in the Yellow pages. There are a couple on Steeles Ave and if I recall correctly a few more in Toronto itself.
Thank you for your courteous responses. Sounds like I will have to stump up for the dual mode video. Oh well.Jeff
You are welcome. Basically either the VCR or a dual PAL/NTSC tv will deal with the issue.
