Well I'm generally conversant with the hi-fi side of things, and totally into DIY tube & speaker projects. But the family is beginning to ask about HT - which I know nothing about, so here's my question.
How can I start on the cheap to improve the sound and upgrade the video later. My TV does not have audio or video outputs, just inputs. I have a VCR but would like to add DVD. Is there a receiver that will allow me to do DVD's and provide the appropriate sound decoding/amplification? Or am I stuck buying two seperate units? Can these be integrated with my TV by putting them before the TV (thus working around the no audio/video outputs)? Finally, how can I do this to allow for future upgrades, but stay inexpensive now (total budget = $600)? Are there good components I should look for on ebay, for example?
Thanks! Steve

Thanks!
#1. Your TV does NOT need any OUTPUTS.
#2. Your TV needs at least 1 video input, preferably SVHS or COMPONENT
#3. An AVR (audio/video receiver) will do everything and is cheap these days!#4. Current model Denon 2802 (List 799) or Hamon Kardon 520 (899) will do everything you need.
#5. A good AVR like those above will:
decode Dolby Digital and DTS
provide 5 channels of amplifier power (Front L&R) (Surround L&R) and Center.
Provide multiple video inputs and ONE Monitor out to your TV so it will switch between different video sources for you.
Provide multiple audio inputs
The HK even provide HDCD as a bonus.#6 a POWERED subwoofer is a MUST for true home theater.
Hope this answers some of your questions.
Since you only have RF inputs I'd reccommend a video to RF adapter. Radio Shack, Recoton and RCA make them. Figure on spending about $30.00.
You may need to build your system one step at a time. This may be better in the long run, as you'll get better components. It's how I did my system many years ago.First and foremost is a good surround provessor. You can get an Outlaw 1050 (sold on the web only) surround processor for $500-$600(?) which will be great!
DVD is also a must (although its benefits will be limited until you get a better TV.) Still, I'll bet you can get a decent DVD palyer for under $200 brand new.
For years, my 2-channel speakers doubled as part of my HT setup.
Any other questions, feel free to email me.
