You sure about that? I've seen a couple reviews where the RP91 was rated far lower than the RP56. From my limited research, the Sage/Faroudja chipset seems to be the cat's meow in terms of progressive chipsets.
Follow Ups:
If you go over to the avsforum.com you'll get many opinions regarding the RP91 being the absolute best out there right now. The RP56 is no slouch either.
Thanks for the link and the info on the RP91. Right now, the RP91 is way out of my league, especially since I just got laid off! :D The RP56 is far closer, but what I was really interested in was the real info on the new Panasonic progressive decks... if they're still using the Sage/Faroudja chipset.If they are, and the info on the link I sent out is right, then it looks like the CP72 is *exactly* what I've been looking for:
* Progressive with Sage/Faroudja chipset
* not silly expensive
* MP3 capability
* 5 disc changer to replace my old CD changer
* DVD-AudioSince the RP56 has the ones that are really important to me (the first two or three), I won't be really heartbroken if Panasonic switched to another chip.
I called Panasonic to determine if the CP72 has the Sage/Faroujda chipa and she did a search on which players had the chip and this is what she gave meXP-30
XP-50
CP-67
RP-62
and the
RP-56The others might be progressive scan but they don't have the Sage chipset.
like on their website or something... No offense to you, but they have given different answers re the RP62/82 over the last few months. Don't know of anybody having opened the RP62, or having done a test that proves S/F chips, but since it's not much different than the RP56 in a cheaper package... I guess this is wishful thinking, Panny is not likely to provide this info openly since S/F is perceived as superior, and the RP82 (maybe) and RP91 don't have it...Why do I care? I want S/F, have an RP82 on order. Have a chance to get another RP56 quite cheap now ($120), it won't last, would prefer it if RP82 isn't S/F FOR SURE.
Here is the response from Panasonic. I called three different times and received the same answers three separate times, and I received this response from Panasonic. Stick to your single player RP56, when Sears already carries the CP-67 5 disc at a whopping 199.00, and bring your ad in and they will match the $169.88 price I found on the net.Dear Panasonic Customer,
Thank you for your inquiry. The models which are currently on sale which use the Sage Faroudja progressive chip (FLI2200)are listed below. Other models which are not yet out such as the DVDXP30 and XP50 also use the same IC.

Subject: Sage/Faroujda
Can you please provide me with a list of the Progressive Scan DVD players
that will carry the Sage/Faroujda chip. I am going to buy one but am
confused about which ones do and do not carry the Sage chip.
Every single "picture" of an RP82 rear that I've seen shows it does not have a coaxial digital audio output, but Panny says it DOES have one on their website. Preferable to me, as I personally don't like Toslink.
especially since my DAC does not have toslink inputs! Personally I'm torn between the Panasonic DVD-RP56/RP62/RP82 and Denon DVD-1600. Not sure if I want to get DVD-A support, or not. The sound is probably improved in the Denon. But I only watch 1-2 DVDs/week. So how important should a DVD player be to me? $500? $250? $150? I have a decent TV, Toshiba 36AF61. Gorgeous pciture. But it's isn't high-def.Also looks of the RP82, in two-tone silver/black - is just play ugly, 1980's style (or something). RP62 is not much better. The Deono looks decent, but is at least twice as much as the other players I've listed. Decisions, decisions...
Go here:
Interesting... I'll definately consider it when it's out and when there's more real info on the other new ones I mentioned... but in the meantime, no more putting up with nasty-ass images from my cheap GE, the RP56 should be here today! :D :D :D
