Mike,I haven't run across any preamp/processors that don't handle PCM. This includes the McIntosh processors.
Methinks the salesmen was a bit light in the facts department.
Which model McIntosh? I'll take a look at it tonight from the website and see what it shows.

The McIntosh MX134 Pre-Amp Processor is what I was looking at when the sales guy sent me down the wrong track.
I don't mean to be rude, but the sales person is not qualified to be selling the product.....Regards,
At the risk of sounding like a Panasonic schill......Speaking of PCM: I just received Panasonic's 2002 catalog, and for the top-of-the-line SA-HA200 receiver, it lists a digital "Multi-Source Re-Master" capability. It seems similar to Pioneer's Legato Link processor. It says it helps MP3 and WMA playback in particular (which makes sense). A 192/24 DAC is also used in this model.
I realize MP3's and $600 receivers aren't "hi-end", but I thought this was interesting, since they don't list this feature on their website.
