How do I find out what the differences are between brands and levels of s-video cables? what is the best value for the Buck?
Follow Ups:
I bought some TecNec professional grade S-Video cables. They're pretty heavy-duty, and fairly flexible. I haven't read any reviews of them, but they seem to work well, and I'd imagine they're quite cost-effective.http://www.markertek.com/MTStore/product.CFM?BaseItem=SV4-SV4-1.5
(link above is same as below. I like redundancy. I like redundancy.)
I needed a low loss 50 ft cable becasue my store bought cable produced flicker in my projector. I used equal lengths of Belden RG-6U with standard RF ends (forget what they are called). Then you use adaptors to BNC and get BNC to S-Video cables. The Belden wire is $0.11 per foot, the adaptors and cables will cost about $15. This will knock the socks off other stuff out there but it is not flexable.Cable loss is related to cross sectional area of the cable. The fatter the cable, the less loss. Dual RG-6U makes for a fat low loss cable. Hard to do better. Of course, the longer the cable, the more loss. Therefore, longer cables need to be fatter than shorter cables.
> Cable loss is related to cross sectional area of the cable.Really? What about the surface-effect? I thought the implication was that current only flows on the surface of a wire, since that's where all the free electrons are. Anyway, surface area does increase w/ respect to volume - just not very fast.
I believe you can get 1 meter for around $50-$60. This S-video cable is ISF certified and will equal or best the competition at this price-point and at a few times this price-point. WidescreenReview did a video cable shootout about 2 years ago -- for some manufacturers, it was embarrassing. Please note: this was not a subjective test (ie; reviewer likes manufacturer X, so he says their cable looks better). Video signals were passed through the cables and the results were recorded. Monster's cables did the best (overall).
It's been a while since I've floated in here but I'd suggested going out to the "cable" forum, ask about the s-Vid & post about what you willing to spend.Have you done a search? Try both cable and video forums.
