I had a similar problem with a Panasonic.... it was a faulty power supply...BTW, when i replaced teh power supply, the picture was WAY better than when the problem was not there.... the power supply is critical on TVs....Lot's O volts going to to the tube!

Sam,How did you go about replacing the power supply? Was it a DIY job or did you take it to a professional to get it done? The reason I ask is that I have the same problem as Syracuse posted...have a Sony too. I thought it was the cheap a$# power cord at first and was going to rebuild that. Anyway...thanks to any response/tips you can give on that power supply transplant.

the TV was under an extended warranty... and, after about 5 visits from their 'professional' repairers, they finally figured out that the power supply was not putting out the voltage it needed... It was not until they actually saw what you are seing that they believed i had a problem... the problem started by a sudden widening and then shrinking of the picture sporadically... only 1 tech saw it on one visit.... finally the power supply had reached th point when i got the picture doing what your tv is doing.....It does not look very complicated, i would have attempted it myself, but the unit was covered!
I would try to hunt doen the powersupply from Sony...
