I just purchased a Philips DVD 724 last night. It was rather cheap, as prices go for DVD players (about 150.00). It has "progresive scam" and "Dolby Figital" along with a few other features that I probably will not use. I could not find any info on this unit (even on the net). I am guessing that it is just too new of a model. I bought it because of the past reputation of other Philips units .... Most of them are good, but not the "best". They seem fairly well built (for the price, anyway). Since I find the need to use this particular unit as my only "audio CD" source, I was very concerned with the quality of playback in that area. We rented two movies last night and the unit worked just great (much better than I did at the control of the new remote). It looks good and operates very well (how can these new DVD's "look" so good for such low pricing ???). Great picture .. good sound. Does anyone else have any comments on this unit ? Has anyone else used one, bought one or have any praise or complaints ?
Follow Ups:
I am trying my second unit. The first was defective. It had problems with chapter beginnings where it would display black lines for a few seconds. The second doesn't look much more promising. I have only attempted to play one dvd, Argento's "Phenomena", and there were many freeze ups. Anyone know if this is common with Philips dvd players? I have never purchased anything from them before.
I just tried. Philips DVD 724 can't be used to copy any DVD without the "Macrovision". So VCR records whith loosing color and quality. What I appriciate most, It's only DVD that can play MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 files whithout converting them in VCD or DVD. Just copy movie mpeg files to CD-R or CD-WR and watch!
It can also play JPEG still files and audio MP3 files. So You Don't need Disc changer. I can squize up to 15 CD in one MP3 CD.
What I wander, if it can play DVD-RW. If it does - it the perfect for price of $139.00!
I have not used the 724 but own the 761 and I can tell you it is very good for the price. They both are in the same "7" series and I think the 761 has two distinct features missing form 724, one being built in dolby digital decoder and the other is component video outputs.I personally think this player is better than the Pioneer in the same price bracket as well as the Sony. It works fine and has good sound reproduction.
The good thing is it plays all region discs and also can be used to copy any DVD without worrying about the stupid "Macrovision".
Hope it helps, however if you need any other info drop me a line.
Happy listening/viewing!

The DVD 724 has component video output with progressive scan and 3:2 pulldown courtesy of a Faroudja chip. The quality and features of this player are remarkable for its price.
