if her subs only input are speaker connectors, are you sure the subwoofer is active and not passive? if it is passive and you are using a line-level LFE channel feed from the amp...you ain't gonna get any sound! If the sub is passive i would use a separate amp for the sub or split the signal coming to the front speakers with a filter and send one split to the speaker and the other to the sub.....don't forget to set the receiver to 'NO' subwoofer is you decide to split the speaker level connections to the sub instead of using a separate amp.

...from her description. It's an infinity (don't know model). She described both speaker-level and line-level connections. I asked her if the sub plugged into a power outlet and she said yes. When turned on (or plugged in) there is a glowing light on the sub. It was hooked up previously to a ProLogic system via the speaker-level connections, so the line level has never been tried. I gave her several suggestions, including trying different settings on the sub's own crossover, volume, and also the receivers various menu-driven speaker and sub settings.
I agree w/ Estes that giving advice remotely to a non-audio person is difficult. Don't knock yourselves out on this one...just seeing if there's an obvious fix (or flaw in the receiver) I was not aware of. thanks.
if the sub is passive and there is a cross-over setting in it it may be meant to have the speaker cables from the receiver connected to the sub and then the speakers are connected from the sub itself and would therefore use the crossover.... just a thought
