I finally broke down and bought a JVC XV-S500BK. My main criteria was progressive scan even though I don't have that kind of TV yet and the ability to play CD-Rs, RWs and mp3 for a party that we hosted. It's worked flawlessly. Surprisingly, mp3 at 192 or better are at least as good as the radio and some are near CD quality.Picture quality and sound are excellent. And it remembers settings unlike an older Sony that I had some time ago, so you just drop in a DVD and press play.
It'd be hard to pay $500. Very few or the better models are over $150.
Plugged into my DAC, this cheap JVC even makes for a decent transport. Go figure.
