I'm in the market for a 16:9 widescreen direct-view HDTV (CRT, not plasma) 34" and above. There isn't much out there in terms of good reviews or comparisons. A videophile magazine recommends the Loewe Aconda 38" ($5500), the Sony 34XBR2 ($4000), and a Toshiba (can't remember the model/price). Do I have other alternatives in the $2000 and under range which are comparable to the Sony and the Tosh? Thanks!

Not many people have heard of Sampo (Taiwan)in terms of direct view TVs (they seem to be more well known for DVD players). I just purchased a 34" 16:9 set (SME-34hwd5), and so far I am quite impressed. I got mine off the floor at Erol's TV in VA for $1500! They sell at regular price of $1600. They claim to have a monitor grade CRT, made by Toshiba, but not used by Toshiba because of cost. I use a Dish 6000 rcvr with the OTA card and get great pictures. Especially good is the new Discovery HD theater. The landscape and macro images they produce are awesome.Disadvantages: only one NTSC tuner, no PIP, weighs 200 lbs (remember when quality could be judged by weight?), deep cabinet
Advantages: Great picture, RGB input as well as 2 component plus 2 S-Video inputs, can be connected to a PC as a monitor.

If you can afford the Loewe Anaconda get it it's awesome. Unfrotunatly like you I only had around 2000.00 to spend to. After comparing many direct view HDTV's I ended up with the RCA F38310. It has a very good HD picture. DVD's also look good. Satelite or digital cable isn't that great unfortunatly. Another thing about the RCA that's could be improved would be to have more than oneset of component inputs. There is also no video output so you can't record to TIVO or a VCR. The price on the sets are very good now. Check one out. Oh yeah if you get the set calibrated it makes HDTV and DVD look a hell of a lot better than what you will see in a showroom or out of the box.

Been looking at TVs for a month. Thought I wanted a 16:9 direct view I could eventually move into the den. I've been sorely tempted by some RPs, but thankfully, the better plasmas are outa my budget,The new Sony 16:9 direct view (34XBR800) will be out in late August, it will not have the high def OTA tuner of the current 34" Sony but it will have a superior line doubler to the old DRC. Even better, it will have list price of $2500, so street price should be considerably less. I like the current 34" Sony 16:9 set better than the Toshiba, but the price of the Sony is prohibitive despite the gorgeous picture.
Panasonic makes a great looking widescreen (around $2200) but you can't turn off SVM (a deal breaker for me) plus the menus are weird. Samsung has a nice, affordable 30" set for around $1200 but that's pretty small. You can get a deal on the 38" RCA (same tube as the Aconda), probably pick it up at Best Buys or Circuit City for $1800. The reliability of Thomson products worries me...a lot.
I'm very intrigued by the new Samsung DLP RP sets just now coming out - there's a 43" that is only about 15" deep and weighs 85lbs.
There are some days, I think, to heck with it, I'll just buy a 36" 4:3 direct view.
