1. it could be that your 'old' system was a high-current amp and therefore even though the wattage rating is lower, it actually was able to produce more volume.2. the new speakers are not as efficient as your old ones... if you got a package deal on the 5.1 speakers... they sometimes come with speakers with sensitivity of 85-87db.
3. What does it sound like in Stereo mode, instead of surround? i know the Sony receiver i have has less output in multi-channel mode than in stereo mode.... Multi is 100W/channel and stereo is 120W/channel.
4. cables? if you are not using a large enough gauge of cable, you may be loosing some bottom-end and therefore would seem not to be as loud..
just some ideas....

Thanks a ton, SamM, much appreciated.I don't know a thing about ohm ratings, but someone recommended I look into it. So I just checked my speakers, the front 2 and center channel are labeled as 8 ohm, but the rear two are 16 ohm. My receiver is labeled as an 8 ohm system if I recall correctly. Should I disconnect the rear speakers and buy new ones? Or can I still use them w/o worrying about messing them or the system up.
What about my subwoofer (salvaged from my computer)? Should I be concerned about its ohm rating as well?
Is the Sub active or passive? (i.e. self-powered or powered via the receiver)... if it is active then you are using the internal amp via a line level feed? Ohm rating wont matter. As far as your surrounds, not sure if a higher Ohm rating would be a bad thing... i think that as your runs of speaker cable get longer and longer (like to the surrounds) the impedance goes way up.... did you make sure that the amps Ohm setting was 8 instead of 4? (typically a switch behind the Sony units...at least the ones i have had).Sorry i cannot be of more help... you might post the impedance question on the speaker forum.
Thanks a lot for all the help, again, Sam. Thanks a lot.I ended up getting a full 6 ohm Yalmaha set of speakers. So far, so good.
It seemed all was well in setting up my HT...until I tried to watch a DVD in DTS. Dolby 5.1 works great, but when I tried to watch "The Roayl Tenenbaums" in DTS, I heard nothing.
My DVD player has optical out, not coax. My receiver has coax DVD audio in, not optical. So, I sent the DVD optical out to the "CD/SCAD" optical input. It works great. I select DVD on the receiver to get the video, then I select CD/SCAD to get the optical audio. Works great with Dolby Digital 5.1, but again, I don't get DTS.
Any tips why?
My DVD player is a tad old (Panasonic, 3-4 yrs old). Is there a chance it can't send DTS to my receiver? Perhaps I have to use DVD coax in on my receiver and not the CD/SCAD? If so, is there a way to convert the optical coming out of DVD player to coax to fit my receiver?
i would look at the model number of the Panasonic and see if it supports DTS... some older units did not yet.... it DTS uses the same path as DD (dolby Digital).. so, if from your other input you are able to get DD 5.1, then i would say it's the DVD player.. Also, at least on the Sony DVD players, you have to go into the setup menu of the DVD player to explicitly enable DTS output (if it does DTS!)Good luck.
"you have to go into the setup menu of the DVD player to explicitly enable DTS output"That did it! Woo hoo! Thanks a ton, Sam.
i guess the manufacturers where afraid of the dreaded noise-of-death that comes out of the receiver if it does not decode DTS! So they make you explicitly enable the functionality...I'm glad you have things setup now! DTS sounds good...don't it?
bought some components set up my first home theatre system. I bought 2 dvds which are formatted in Dolbe digital. When playing them they sound good however receiver decodes them as pro logic. Manual tells you to press Auto decode button and receiver will decode the format. I did but no go. Pro Logic. I tried pushing mad buttons in hopes, but no go. Please help
