The speakers are montior 7, Atom rear, center, and PS-1000 sub.I am upgrading from an old Kenwood Pro logic receiver, and I'm looking
for something in the $300 range with at least 1 optical digital in.I have so far narrowed down to an ONKYO SR500. It gets pretty good reviews for sound quality, and I liked it when I listened to it.
Any comments? Recommendations?I have a separate listening room with a pile of d.i.y. gear for general audio listening.

Just took my ex shopping for a Receiver since I moved all my equipment out. I talked her into spending the $100 more than the cheapest Pioneers and Sonys and getting the Onkyo SR-500 for its discrete amps and higher current design.I'm VERY impressed with it to say the least, for $300 its 65 WPC drives the Polk SDA 2B's she inherited from me to just about as high levels as my 225 WPC Carver TFM-25 did. The sound quality is excellent, very good detail and dynamics, especially considering the price range. If this thing is where your budget is, I say go for it, it's totally impressive for how inexpensive it is.
When I decide to eventually move from 2 channel I will definitely consider one of the Onkyos, maybe the SR-700...
What about the HK AVR220? Decent discrete amps. Online should be near your price, maybe at Best Buy too, but IMO the 320 is worth the extra. I replaced a Kenwood Pro Logic receiver with the 320, huge improvement, not just because of the decoding modes.
Onkyo has had problems with build quality on their recent model line. Also major Dolby digital decoding problems. I have a TX-DS797 that I finally just put away in a closet because of the Dolby digital decoding problems while watching and listening to movies on digital cable. Onkyo is very unresponsive to the problems. You would probably be better off with Denon or Yamaha.
