I was looking at Yamaha receivers the other day, and I noticed that they do not have balance control on the front panel. Is there a way to control the balance with a menu? Or is this just not available. Also, can the optical digital input be mapped directly to the 'CD' selector?
I am looking at the 5450,5550,5460 models. Any comments about these, or recomendations for other receivers that I should consider? I am looking in the $300 range.
Follow Ups:
I just bought a 5550 last week for $319 and so far it's working very well for me. Yes, you can adjust the left to right balance via the menu. You can also assign the digital coax input and the three optical digital inputs to any component you want. The factory setting has the digital coax input assigned to "CD", so initially I had to select "CD" to play a DVD disc. My only digital input is from my DVD player, so it would not be a problem to just select "CD" in order to play a DVD movie, but that just isn't "right". So I reassigned that input to "DVD" and now, when I select DVD, that's what I get.
I don't know about the 5460, but I chose the 5550 over the 5450 because of the additional digital inputs (thinking of the future), the fact that the 5550 has actual binding posts instead of clips, and because of the much nicer remote. The difference between the 5450 and the 5550 was only $40.
Hope this helps.
