I really like my Panasonic 47WX49 (especially after an intensive ISF calibration by guru Gregg Loewen). Simply SUPERB picture, especially with progressive scan DVD. I think they make a 51" or 56" that is very similar. Best Buy is selling the 47WX49 for $1699 now . . .

Can you turn off the SVM on this set? I couldn't on the DV Pannys.I compared this set side by side with the Samsung 1715W...I liked the Sammy picture better, but then you can never really tell much with the way sets are displayed in the stores. How are analog and cable PQ on your Panny?
I'm considering the two aforementioned RPs, and also toying with the idea of one of the new Samsung DLPs. I love the picture on the new Sony 34XBR800 but lordie - it's HEAVY.
I'll have whatever I buy calibrated by an ISFer, no question.
There's no user-serviceable way to disable the SVM, but a tweaker named Brett has a web site that describes how to do it (URL below). I'm not a gearhead by any means -- I'm a writer, not an engineer -- but it took me all of 10 or 15 minutes. Pulling those wires can be hard, though. The connector is crimped on pretty tight.I wouldn't EVER judge a TV picture by what you see in the store. The colors and brightness are pushed up way high to look good in the store. The ISF calibration would look dim and dull in the store, but is absolutely stunning in a light-controlled room. That's because color temperatures, brightness, etc. are *natural*, not tweaked to stand out from a bank of screens at Big Tube City.
Depending on where you are and availability of ISF services, I recommend Gregg Loewen. He does traveling tours around the country tweaking sets. He did mine two weeks ago and I couldn't be happier with the result.
