I currently have the Sony EP9ES which does not have DTS processing. I just bought the Sony DVP500 with SACD.As a result, I'm thinking about buying the Sony TA-P9000ES 5.1 pre-amp and running the 5.1 channel output from my DVD player direct into it so I can have multi-channel SACD and DTS playback (I might get rid of the EP9ES and play DD direct as well).
Will I suffer a loss of quality using the built-in DD/DTS decoder through the P9000ES vs. a processor?
Is this difference significant? If so, what can I do to upgrade the EP9ES so it decodes DTS as well?

Unless you are using all full range speakers, you'll also need outboard bass management. I'm using a Sony DVP650 to Outlaw ICBM to Sony TAP9000...as you suggested. Sounds fine to me, but this was an upgrade to have DD/DTS decoding without replacing my old prologic preamp/processor. The other thing you lose is speaker distance timing adjustment, if that's important. Do you buy a new processor with DTS now only for it to become obsolete in 12 to 18 months when the Hi-Rez digital outputs become availible? I think I"ll wait.
I'm not familiar with your Sony but usually the built-in decoders are not of the same quality nor as versatile as those in a separate processor. The degree of significance being dependent upon the discernment of the listener.
Upgrading the EP9ES can be done by companies like MSB Technology but it's expensive.
$600 for adding DTS to an EP9ES !!!http://www.msbtech.com/Catalog/FAQ/adddts.htm
Unless you really, really must keep the EP9ES, I would sell it and buy a processor that includes a proper analog bypass eg. the Rotel RSP-1066 which has all the DD/DTS/DPL II surround modes plus can accept the 5.1 SACD output and leave it unmolested , ie.leaves it analog.

Thanks Michael for the suggestions, unfortunately both the Rotel and the MSB options are too expensive. I'm primarily a two channel guy that enjoys a good movie experience once in a while.Strangely I never really hear of anyone using the onboard decoder for DVD players, yet nearly all of them come supplied with it.
I was amazed that the $200 DVD playre red book CD playback was quite good compared to my Musical Fidelity X-Ray that cost several times more.
I think I'd be happy if the onboard DD/DTS performed as well against a stand alone processor.
