Synergy! My office system is modest. Sony STRDB1070 6 channel receiver, new Sony NS715P DVD player, 4 Michaura (built by Axiom) M55 speakers, Merak MC6H center channel speaker (2 x 6.5" drivers, 1 7"x3" horn tweeter, also built by Axiom) and the newest addition, a 15" Dahlquist PDQ15 subwoofer. How sweet and powerful this combination sounds! The bass is accurate, clean and sounds like it's coming from the speakers rather than the sub.I'm watching KPAX and I'm at the movies! (43" Hitachi HDTV).
I'd like to compare this system to my main HT system. This system is much more elaborate - Onkyo THX receiver, same Merak MC6H center , big M665 Michaura towers, a pair of Michaura M55 side surrounds, a pair of Mission 77ds back surrounds driven by an outboard Denon PMA500V amplifier (2x85watts), and a pair of subwoofers, a Klipsch LF10 and Velodyne CHT100 (10"), Toshiba SD9200 DVD-A.
Now, don't get me wrong, this big system sounds terrific, but I must have it set up incorrectly. Even with 2 subs, all that power, the Sony/Dahlquist system has more slam, and the bass is more ... integrated sounding.
I think what makes the difference is the Sony in comparison to the Onkyo. I have to double check the connections
For those with the Michaura M55s, you know how sweet they are from mid bass on up to the most tinkly, sparkly highs.
Another thought. If you ever have the chance to grab a Merak MC6H center channel speaker, grab it!! They're cheap and if they don't blow away your current and expensive center channel, you have quite a center channel!
Follow Ups:
There is significantly more piston area in one 15 vs. 2-10's, but there are, of course, many other parameters that can preclude direct A-B comparisons, such as efficiency, enclosure volume, power, crossover freq, slope, driver design, etc. Of course, many will say that a 15 cannot be as articulate as a 10 due to it's mass.....
Maybe a receiver is not enough for the big speakers at home, also the subs may not be well setup...
Funny you should say that. The M665s are very efficient, nevertheless, I picked up a 2 channel Kenwood KM-X1000 130 watt x 2 channel amp for the front main speakers. Definitely more power, but much less sweet sounding. The fellow I bought the Kenwood from was nice enough to take it back.I'm have to check that I used the correct outputs from the Onkyo because I don't think I can get DTS out of it yet. I am also pretty sure that my sub placement is less than ideal, but no options.
Thanks for your thoughts.
I am only guessing, but your problem seems to be bass, the receiver sounds good, I had one too, but not the same bass as from separate power, had Rotel, now Bryston...Anyway, bass is quite complicated, speaker positioning, large or small, sub setup...
