Symptoms:* stereo sound fine
* picture marred by smearing black horizontal lines, worse around print on screen. This replay evident on both a new JVC machine and another older s-video machine. It is still just evident on the recording machine although the picture is still watchable.
What foxes me is that previous experience has been that when the heads start to wear the sound becomes distorted. However maybe with s-video, picture break up is the first to go. Anyone know?
Follow Ups:
Wierd, but I finally think I have tracked it down. The satellite decoder has two video outputs - one is S-video and is connected to the VHS recorder, the other is composite, and that is connected to the audio/video switcher leading to the projector. It was a loose connection to the latter that was causing the problem. Rather surprising because we have looked at a few programs via this more direct connection lately and the pic seemed fine.
So, it appears that there was some sort of video feedback due to the insecure connection and this caused the problem. What is still puzzling is that tapes viewed on the recorder on which they were made are not perfect but watchable with only minor lines through the picture while if the same tape is unwatchable if viewed through one of the other two s-VHS recorders.
