I'm trying to decide between these 3 dvd players...panasonic rp82, rp91, and denon 1600. Right now I have 27 inch tv but upgrading to hdtv widescreen. Which of these 3 players are better quality and has best picture and sound and just overall better player? All these play dvd-a and are chroma bug free right?
Follow Ups:
The RP62 and RP82 are almost identical in performance and both use the much ballyhooed Sage/Faroudja de-interlacing chip - the 82 has DVD-A capability, which, frankly, I don't care about, but you may. (I'm very happy with my Cary 303 in the 2 channel rig.) I believe it may have a couple extra video tweaks, but you can't tell the difference between these two on a 27".The RP91 is a highly praised player, uses Genesis chipset, and has scaling capability for non-anamorphic DVDs, a feature I really wish I had on my RP56. You may want a scaling DVDP if your TV locks on full when fed a progressive signal. The Denon is a rebadged Panny (RP56) with quite a few (mostly audio) upgrades. It also has rave reviews, but on a 50" RP I couldn't tell much difference between it and the RP62.
Have you checked out the progressive DVD shootout at hometheaterhifi.com?? Lots of good info there. I also highly recommend avsforum.com - see the DVD player forum - a GREAT place to learn about HT...avsforum is the best HT site I've found so far on the web. I find audioreview nearly useless.
I have done some recent research on these but have not taken time to watch for myself. None have chroma bug. The Pan RP91 is rated very well on audioreview.com and has most features but also uses the genesis chipset which is said to have inferior playback performance compared to machines, such as the Pan RP82 and Denon 1600 using the sage / faroudja chipsets. The RP82 lacks many features found on the 91 but should exhibit fewer artifacts during playback. Opinion of the Denon 1600 seeeed to be good but not glorious.I could not find an idea player for me in the less than $500 range. I have decided to buy either the pan rp56 ($129 on ebay) or the pan rp82 for about $220. Both of these lack features but have solid playback and will make a good back-up player once something better hits the market. If DVD-A playback is a major concern and you love high build quailty, consider the Toshiba sd9200. It is beautifully built and has super DVD-A playback. For $400 on ebay it is a sweet machine. Buy both it and the Pan56 for less than $550 and you can have both great video and great audio.
