It is not the same without the sub for the very low frequencies. I once had some 12" Cheviots in my HT system, and they bloody rattled disturbingly on the very LF content. Whereas the sub gives more a feeling, and a certain amount of "sound" depending on how they're set up. A relatively small proportion of movies have significant LF effects, so all in all you wouldn't be missing much, but you'll suspect when the Ardens vibrate weirdly. To protect the Ardens, try a setup like "large" front speakers *with* a sub, XO frequency for sub lowest allowable, but don't actually connect a sub. Adjust XO freq upwards if it causes mechanical Arden vibration.

[You'll note the Tannoy 12" and 15" HPD drivers have no difference in their fundamental resonance freq, and that's what causes the disturbing vibration at LF.]
