In just about every case, the best route to take is to run the digital out on the DVD player to the digital input on the surround preamp/receiver. There are extremes like, say, pairing a Denon DVD9000 with a $199 receiver. Not likely, but there are some oddballs that would do this...
Follow Ups:
You want multichannel Hi-Rez right now...SACD or DVD-A output analog only.

The 5.1 input means it will accept 6 analog inputs. For example, from a DVD-V player, DVD-A player, SACD player, or from a mutichannel processor. The last could be used if you had a surround receiver that only had a Dolby Surround (Pro-Logic, Dolby Digital) decoder and wanted to use an outboard DTS decoder (like the Millenium 2.4.6).
