Receivers don't translate the signal formats. Your receiver will not convert the source component video input and put it on the S-video output to the TV anyway, so this isn't an option. There isn't such a huge quality difference from S to component, like there is going from composite to S, so don't feel too bad.

Another thing to try is to run the source directly into the television for maximum picture quality. Of course, if you only have one S-video input and you're running DVD plus, say, digital cable, that may not be an option . . .
another thing...my dvd player has optical out and a orange plug that says PCM/BISTREAM, which of those is better for 5.1 and 6.1 movies?
in the Digital and Cable asylums. For movie sound I wouldn't sweat the choice. For the same money IMO you can get a better coaxial cable (for the orange RCA jack) than Toslink (optical). Cheap Toslink is pretty flimsy and not the greatest, but if you treat it gently it will do the job for movies just fine. There is a ~$10 75 ohm coaxial cable that RS sells that many people think is quite good, haven't tried it but worth a shot.
