I have a good preamp/amp 2 channel system with a subwoofer to which I would like to add a surround decoder for DVDs and TV. I do not need a center amp or speaker, so a decoder with left/right rear amps would be fine.I need this decoder to be completely removed from the signal path when listening to music. What products are available? Cost is an issue.
Thanks for any advice...
Check out the Yamaha DSP E-492. The 492 is a pro logic decoder/preamp with a three channel amp (3 @ 60 wpc) for the center and rears. It even has a 5.1 channel input for DTS, DD, or even DVD-A. You actually could also do the same thing with any reciever that has main L and R pre outs. Hope this helps.P.S. I use a 492 with my B&W/Pass Labs/Meridian/Audio Electronics stereo system with excellent results.
They use analog for all signals except rear for Pro logic (they do not process Dolby Digital - it is not really necessary in my opinion and for your set up), and the centre channel can be switched out. I do not even feed the mains through the processor, merely the side & rear signals. It has a nice amp built in which canh be used for the side channels. Also has a sub output for even more impressive bass output for movies.
I can send you a couple of reviews if you are interested.
They come up for sale on the net from time to time.Best of luck

Check out Vantas.com. You will however have to accept the
center channel amp thats built into it. Just don't use it.
I'm not aware of any manufacturers that make what you're
looking for without a center ch amp. This unit has gotten
great reviews, and is a good value. Hope this helps.
