In Reply to: RP-91 vs. RP-82 in a 2 channel system posted by Radiator on October 04, 2002 at 09:45:45:
Both have 2 Channel out. I would still go for the RP-91 if you can find one. I think it is a little more substantail machine.
Follow Ups:
Yeah, I was thinking that also...why do you say "if I can find one"...are they discontinued? Can you recommend a chain or some store that would offer the Panasonic line? Checked Best Buy at lunch, no go....Circuit City perhaps?
Yes they were discontinued some time ago.
I don't think that the RP-91 has been discontinued (probably next year) as of yet...it is listed in-stock at J+R and B&H. I'm in the process of getting a new dvd player (without a chromabug) and the RP-91 seems about the best bet for the $75o and under category. If i didn't already have a 777es and a mild chroma bug didn't bother me, i would look at the sony 9oooes...if you can find one. If i'm not mistaken the new panasonic models have filled in below the RP-91 and replaced models like the 56-keeping the 91 as a flagship. This site is great all things audio, but AVS forum has more info/gossip available on dvd/video. You might want to check it out.
The RP-82 may not be billed as the Panasonic flagship but it most defintely outperforms the RP-91 in video quality. IMO using the progressive output going to my Toshiba 16x9, the 82 was alot better than the 91. As for audio it was a toss up with the 91 being the better player for redbook CD's and DVD-A being a virtual tie. I opted for the CP-72 (same video section of the 82) becuase of its ability to play 5 discs and I already have a seperate redbook player.
Hey All....Well, just got the Panasonic RP-82 from Onecall.com.
Running it thru my Mitsu 73" hdtv.
I must say, the picture quality is beautiful!
Images are bright and crisp, especially using the Cinema 2 mode.
Lost just a touch of color level(nothing substantial at all) running thru component out but black level is right on. Remember it's all in the source. So many options with this player to adjust video and audio settings. Can't think of any better player for the money.
Anyway, first film watched "Meet The Parents." Quality was nice, overall balanced color yet picture was slightly on the soft side but nice.
Second film: "Lord Of The Rings." I was breathless!! The images were 3 dimensional, colorful, crisp, clean. Totally immersed me into the film. The detail was so good, I could see each strand of hair or glistening beads of sweat on the characters. Amazing...Third Film: "Jaws". All I can say is for an film over twenty five years old, looks like was remastered last week! Can actually see the shark is rubber and water so real, I put my bathing suit on. :)
For $220.00 I can't be more happy. Grab one if you can find it.
I just completed the transaction through B&H....they honored the cheapest price I could find on a new RP91, which was $399. I chose them because the reviews for their customer service were high. Just wanted to thank everyone who posted to this thread, and helped me feel good about my decision....this is one of the ways the web can help us in day to day life.....Thanks!
