So I finally got my first HT system. The better half doesn't actually know the details or expense. What would be a GREAT DVD to play for the first time to knock her socks off?

As already suggested, the beach landing during 'Saving Private Ryan' is an amazing demonstration which should raise the hairs on the back of your neck, but I'd say it's a more suitable disc for convincing male friends that you're not really an audio geek and are in fact someone to be envied. A couple of my friends called round for a quick demo out of curiosity but ended up sitting through the whole film. After it finished they were booking seats at my place again for "Blade 2" and "Lord of the Rings".For a woman I'd say something more light-hearted would do the trick, and "Monsters Inc" has both state of the art picture and sound, but whatever gendre your missus enjoys will be enhanced with DVD.

Since it's for your better half i would probably save the shoot 'em ups for your buddies...try the beginning of Toy Story 2 ... great image and agressive use of the surrounds. Have fun and good luck!
Sound design during the invasion scene is worth the price of admission alone.
