I contracted with one of the satellite providers to receive my TV signals. Through the promotional offering used to attract customers, I was provided with a bare bones receiver in that it does not offer a 5.1 surround sound signal through an optical output. I am about to upgrade with the blessing of the satellite provider. I need to know if anyone out there has gone through the process. Which receivers should be considered? How much should they cost? Etc.,etc. I am not interested in HDTV at this time because there is so little of it offered in my location and my CRT TV receiver is analog.I know there are a few brands out there. Which do you feel are the best in terms of both sound and picture reception.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have used the RCA units before (with and without DD) and the picture quality was not as good as with the Sony units.... Are you talking DirecTV? if so, then i currently use a Sony Sat A55 with optical out for DD and the unit has been working flawlessly for quite a while now (about 1 year).... The picture/sound is better than the RCA.BTW, just because the input signal may be digital and should be same regardless what unit you choose.... it says NOTHING about the output!
Also the Zenith DTV1080 has both optical and coax digital out not sure but I think the 520 does as well
