I have a problem with audio on DD from Directv. I originally thought this was a receiver problem, but have since proved that to be a non-issue. I have tried 2 RCA DRD450RGs and 1 Sony SAT-A65A. All 3 boxes exhibit the same problem. When I receive a broadcast in DD, the audio periodically cuts out. The problem is the worst when I first tune to the broadcast, but continues throughout it. I'm using a Denon 4802 and have tried 2 different optical inputs on the receiver and have tried a new known working cable. All transponders are showing in the mid-90s to near 100. Anybody have any ideas? This is becoming quite a pain.

Sorry to hear you are still having a problem.... Sounds like the receiver having a problem with it's Auto Format decoding... is their a way to force it to be just DD and not try to auto decode?
I have 3 choices: Auto, PCM, or DTS. The thing I don't understand is how come this works fine on Auto for DVDs and Playstation2????? This is a $2500 receiver so I'm just a little miffed.
proly because the DVD's DD multi-channel signal is constant and therefore does not cause the receiver to re-sync itself where as the DD signal from DSS is not.... Yes, it's optical, but that does not mean that the signal is always DD or DD multichannel..... This might explain why my Sony receiver takes about 5 seconds to switch from mode to mode.... it is proly to minimize the type of problem you are experiencing... it waits longer before it decides that it's a request to switch formats....Also, i've noticed that the DSS signal is not always the same within the same broadcast and i believe it's this way to save band-width....
Have you replaced your optical cable? They are notorious for not snapping into place firmly and loosening up. Or you might have cracks internally.Try a different toslink and if that's the problem, Outlaw makes a very well designed one.
I just replaced the cable with one from BetterCables. Both capables work fine with DVDs. Does this mean their is some sort of problem with the Denon and if so, why would a DVD work fine but the satellite has the problem?
sounds like a problem with the receiver not being able to handle momentary changes in DD signal.... i.e. switching between DD 2 channel to multichannel or something like that...
