I was told by a dealer this weekend that some DVD players have a "progressive scan output" that can feed a Digital TV the additional signals to fill in between the lines 1,3,5 etc. that normal DVD has (500 line resolution).
Is this correct? It sounds like some DVD players provide 1000 line resolution. Huh?
What she was saying was that this was better than "line-doubling" which I have seen on some DTV sets.
as far as i know, the dvd only has 500 lines of data in it, so there's no way a dvd player could get data where there isn't any. that being said, i think progressive scan dvd players will just double the lines that are there to give the hd standard 1080 lines. i suppose there's potential for that to look better than outputting the regular signal and then doubling it outboard. maybe that's what the dealer was talking about?richard h
That may be reality but that is not what the dealer said. What she said didn't make a lot of sense though, so it may be that she was in over her head and I didn't want to push her under and be impolite. She was cute. The last time I did that was to a Bose salesman and lost out on a date.
My question concerned the effect of resolution enhancement of a DVD on a digital (HDTV) display. Line doubling is simple to understand and the result is clearly beneficial. Can someone explain to me what is going on when a DVD player has a "progressive scan" output that is fed to an HDTV? Why would that be higher resolution than the 500 lines?
and you can bet that she hasn't done any comparisons.
Progressive scan is non-interlaced. That is the gun does not alternate odd and even lines. This helps in flicker. The higher res helps in clarity. BTW your computer screen displaying a hi-res photo image would be a good example.
Sorry, but I don't get the "picture." My understanding is that a DVD with 500 line resolution, playing on a DTV with potentially 1080 line resolution, puts up only alternate lines (1,3,5 etc). Line doubling copies lines to the space below.First, is that right?
Second, how does progressive scan work? What does it place in the even lines?
Thanks. This is important to understand before spending bucks on the DTV and a newer DVD.
and I'll buy when I see a demonstration of artifact free superiority relative to my Faroudja.
