Wow, did'nt know there was that many DVD formats. This would
be used for transfering lots of old VHS tapes to DVD, so don't need
prog. scan and gobs of features. So Pano and maybe philips are the
only two out there?. I thought I saw a Sony somewhere...
Follow Ups:
I think Pioneer also has recorders. As to recording VHS tapes, if they're Macromedia encoded, my understanding is they won't record (you get jibberish for a picture). The ads I've seen always talk about recording shows (of course, that would be from an external tuner), transfering camcorder tapes and any VCR tapes you have made (again not from a macromedia encoded source which I think can be copied to tape OK as a first generation copy). Unless one of these situations is your major reason for wanting a recorder, I think it may be wise to hold off. No Sony that I know about. Philips and Panasonic are it. And both machines are expensive. I've heard there are some issues on the Panasonics - go to avsforum.com and hometheaterforum.com for details - several threads on both forums.
