Which is better for DVD movies, An Optical digital audio output, or a coax digital output? Or are they about the same?
Follow Ups:
a coax digital connection is always preferable to a toslink(optical) one. Typically the coax connection has a bandwidth of 10 meg whereas the toslink has a bandwidth of 4 meg. The coax digital connection will give more a more detailed and vivid sound. Obviously the cable will have alot to do with the sound. I have noticed that panasonic has deleted the coax digital out on some of their dvd players which is a mistake in my opinion. Many people confuse the toslink optical connection with the superior st optical glass connection.
Yes, there are LOTS of opinions about this here and in the cable asylum.... personally the COAX does better in my system than the Toslink.... Also, you can easily make a KILLER coax digital cable (max Rochlin Memorial with extra shielding) that is well worth the time and money (very little of both needed for this).
For movies I'd go with either. There's lots of talk about this in Cables and Digital. You won't get one answer. Traditionally coax is preferred by audiophiles...but that's not what you asked. A cheap coaxial cable is lots stronger than a cheap Toslink cable, and will *probably* work better for DVD sound for the buck.
