What could the problem be when the lips do not move in sync with the sound when watching a DVD movie? Our brand new Men In Black II DVD does this and I'm wondering if it's the DVD itself or if there is a timing problem that can be adjusted. I have a Pioneer Receiver and a Hitachi DVD player - both brand new. Other DVDS don't seem to do this.

and came up with this:http://www.dvdcity.com/resources/officialfaq.html#1.35
In short, the answers are:
"The cause of the sync problem is a complex interaction of as many as four factors:
Improper sync in audio/video encoding or DVD-Video formatting.
Poor sync during film production or editing (especially post-dubbing or looping).
Loose sync tolerances in the player.
Delay in the external decoder/receiver."It would appear that the sync problems you saw with MIB II could be any of the first two. It also suggests that the first two will be present in order to achieve the second two. If you are sending the audio signal to your receiver, it could be slowly getting out of sync. Their suggestion was to *sigh* pause and restart the movie.

Hope this helps...at least to achieve peace of mind!
Thank you for your help. According to the sales rep for Hitachi, this is a software problem with some new movies and that we just need to upgrade the DVD software. The service depot has the upgrade discs and is forwarding it to us.I hope it's as simple as that.
Sounds like Hitachi will only supply it if you ask...hmmm...Oh well, I'm just hoping that Sony can come up with a similar solution for my S9000.
Thank YOU for the latest info!
I just wanted to send an update about the Hitachi DVD player that I was having problems with. The software update has been installed and the video/audio sync problems are now gone.Whatever the problem was, Hitachi had a quick fix.
Thanks for all of your help.
I do not know what's going on but someone is screwing bad with this stupid DVD technology. Try your disc on other players. It must be a disc.
As it turns out, I don't believe it is the disc. I borrowed my friend's copy of the same DVD and the same thing happened. I watched the new Austin Powers DVD today and again the lips were not in sync with the audio. Pausing the movie and restarting it puts it back in sync but after about 10 minutes it goes out of wack again.Strangely, older DVD movies don't seem to have this problem. This makes me wonder if there is something in the newer DVD settings and I have to adjust my DVD player accordingly - I don't know what though. Or is there some setting in the Receiver that has to be adjusted - It's a Pioneer Receiver.
It's a brand new Progressive Scan Hitachi DVD player - it came as a free promo with my Hitachi 43" HDTV.
I'm ready to return it and exchange it for another DVD player to see if there is a difference.
I posted this question quite some time ago, and got no replies here. I would start with DVD player settings, and while you try to find jsut which one they are, give your dealer a call. They should know.I saw the same thing on a sony dvps-9000. IF you find out, please post!
good luck.
