Heard a rumor that these folks are going to introduce a 38" HDTV with the new aspect ratio early next year. Is it possible that we may see a 40". I am holding off purchasing a projection TV cause my wife feels they don't offer the crisp detailed picture of a regular tube. Any comments?
Your wife is correct. Broadcast TV is of limited quality & a large screen shows ALL the problems, plus projection TVs have limitations as well. This adds up to a bad combination. Projection TVs need to be set up properly by a technican who has been trained to do so. Unless you are in a major US city, there are only limited HDTV/Digital tv broadcasts. None of the cable or satillite companies currently offer it. The question is do you want to be one of the early adopters of this new technology? You will pay a premium for the chance, but what the heck. Progressive scan DVD players are just coming on the market. I don't know if there are any DVD movies in this format yet. Pick up Stereophile's Guide to Home Theatre and you will find that HDTV is still in its infancy. If you watch a lot of movies at home then a projection TV can be made to look great. But at the same time it sounds like you want to buy something. I would wait a while or buy one of the current 36" TVs, that are quite reasonably priced and then change once things settle out. Patience is the best plan in my mind.
