You'd lose multichannel processing with your proposed setting. Just FYI, I A-B'd the internal processors on both my Yamaha amp and the RP91 and found the RP91 did a much better job with CD sound. So now I run analog ICs from the DVD player into the Yammie's analog inputs . . .
Follow Ups:
Yes, at this point music takes priority and my system is geared toward 2 channel listening. My main concern is if any modification to the preferences has to be performed when connecting the DVD player digitally. Also, if the analog (through the TV) and digital (through my system) connections are both options when viewing a movie?
Doesn't seem to make sense to me. I guess my only thought is to try the digital out from the DVD player into your CDP to see if its D/A converters are better than the DVD player's. Chances are it will be six of one, a half dozen of the other, as they say in Merry Olde England . . .
I have 2-1/2 year old so I have yet to cross that bridge. I'm hoping she'll be facile with remote controls!!!
