Hi Everyone,This is my first time in the Hi-Rez forum, and I know next to nothing about buying/using a DVD in a 2 channel system.
My wife and I listen to 2 channel exclusively - no home theatre setup, but we like the better picture the DVD players we have seen have compared to VHS tapes we have and rent, so we're in the market for a DVD player.
We have a decent (to us) CD player in the NAD C541i in my system, so the CD performance of the DVD player isn't too much of an issue.
We have a Sharp 27" tv (not digital), so progressive scan isn't needed now, but we may upgrade in the next year or 2.
My questions are:
1. Is the video performance of most DVD players in the +/- $250 price range pretty much the same when connected to a non-digital tv?
2. How about reliability issues with most DVD players. Any brands/models to stay away from?
3. Given that we might upgrade our tv in the next year or 2, should we give consideration to a DVD player now that will be compatible to a digital tv if/when we purchase one, or should we just buy a DVD player now, and worry about compatibilty with a digital tv later.
Thanks for any suggestions/help, and I apologize for the simplistic questions.
Follow Ups:
Probably the best bets in DVD players are the Panasonics, but all new players are progressive scan. It is possible to disable the progressive scan feature and connect the player via S-VHS or component video connections. You should be able to get the RP-82 for under $200 (if you can find them). The next model down is the RP-62 and it sells for about $180. Both are very good, reliable players.
Thanks for your suggestions. I really appreciate it. As I posted below, the Panasonic models mentioned don't seem to be available here in Omaha, but I will be traveling to Chicago in the next week or two to visit my brother, so I'll be able to check there.Have a nice weekend!
and returned that piece of junk the next day. It had stairstepping artifacts galore. My 3 year old Toshiba didn't exhibit the same problems. When artifacts weren't visible (only about 10% of the time) it had a very natural, warm toned picture, but the artifacts were far beyond acceptable. So much for the hype about Panasonic players.
No problems. Maybe you just got a bummed unit. It happens. The Panasonics are highly regarded with the RP-82 being virtually unavaliable due to demand. One nice thing about the Panasonics, they don't suffer from the croma bug artifacts that afflict all Toshibas. Read the enclosed link. Within the article, there is another link to a list of those players with and without the bug.
I've had the Toshiba 3108 (now w/sister) and run the Toshiba 2200 ($220) and I haven't noticed anything out of whack. I did recently purchase the Denon 1600 to use as a DVD~A player in a two channel system and from what I've been told, it's the first 'new' Denon w/o the Chroma Bug from the factory. Unfortunately, I've yet to use it as a DVD~Vp.
a frequent basis via both a 65" rear projector and a 7 1/2 foot front projector. I have numerous other players that supposedly have the bug, but I've never seen the bug on them either. As such, the chroma bug is a non-issue for me. As far as the RP62 goes, perhaps I did have a defective unit, because it was beautiful 10% of the time, but awful 90% of the time.
You're supposed to be anal about these things. I hope you're not going to tell us that you can't tell the difference between a pair of $50 cables and the $500 stuff. That would be cause for a 15 yard penalty and loss of down!!!
First, sorry about mis-posting the original question in the High-Rez Asylum. Never saw the Video Asylum in my previous travels to AA.Second, I wanted to thank everyone who has posted so far. I really appreciate your comments. Per R. Hertz's suggestion, I've tried to locate the Panasonic RP 82 or RP 62, but they don't seem to exist here in Omaha. Guess I'll try the internet.
Thanks again, guys!

Or am I in the wrong place?
It was transferred here along with my response from the hi-rez forum.
It causes some confusion. Oh well, next time!
and was wondering how long it was going to take before someone posted, 'hey moron.' It didn't take long. LOL
