How do you like this display panel? Your coments will be appreciated.I almost bought the Sony Grand Wega kf-50xbr800 but there have been so many bad comments about the black scale I decided not.
Is there any problem making connections because of the BNC connectors on this display pannel?
Follow Ups:
from CES - Panasonic, Zenith, Samsung, Sharp and they all look as good or better than plasma without all the downsides.
My Plasy was shipped today and I will not be cancelling my order.I may regret it ( I wanted 50" but they were too expensive.)
I felt there were more down sides to LCD than to Plasmas when I looked at them. The 2 biggest things I saw in faver of Plasma were the 160 viewing angle. This did not seem to hold true with the LCD's I saw, they really seemed to change as you moved to the sides. And the black contrast of course this was on the Sony Grand Wega. On the up side I could get a bigger screen cheeper that had an excellent Hi Res but the low res wasn't that great. ( Down converting I guess.)
Some times you have to make a choice and live with it and that is what I have done. (Plasma will be better next year to.)
Projectors keep coming down also and they seem to have the very best picture but I have no place to put one.
For those that have used the Panasonic Plasma displays, what do you do about them only having a single component input on the back. What if you want to connect an HDTV Tuner and a DVD player, short of buying a new reciever do you know anything that can be done?I'm interested in buying a Panasonic, but this is affecting my decision!
If you like the picture on the Panasonic best (as I do), don't let the single component input throw you off. The easiest thing to do (short of routing them through an AV receiver) is to simply by a component video switcher: several component sources in --> one component out.The switchers can be found at all price points, from $15 Radio Shack jobs (which some people say work fine) up to $600 Extron pro-level switchers (actually, you could even spend a lot more).
I wanted a high performance, but reasonably priced unit. So, I bought the RGB4X-R component switcher with remote control from Inday. It's got very good specs, and it has discrete remote input codes, which makes the unit very friendly with most Universal Remotes.
Here it is:

This does look like a excellent solution. Thanks for the post.
Are you running HDTV on your set? If you are does it make a big differance?
Yes, I watch HDTV signals. I'm not sure what you mean by "does it make a big difference?" Do you mean watching HDTV vs regular TV?
If so, YES. HDTV looks spectacular on the Plasma, even though it is not full HD res, it looks clearer and more "HD" than most HD-res CRTs I've seen.I don't think the Inday component switcher degrades the HD signal at all.
Hope this answers your question
Sorry to ask so many questions. My Panny is arriving tomarrow. Are you running Cable or Satilite for your TV programing?
Did you have to get a HDTV receiver to get HDTV?
Did you get the optional DVI interface for the Panny and if so are you using it?I'm running digital cable and was told by a salesman at Circuit City that I would have to get an HDTV receiver to get HDTV. When I called the cable company they said if my TV is HDTV compatible all I will have to do is exchange my Box for an HDTV Cable box, no charge and it will work. (This will be easy to try.)
Thanks for the feedback. Rich H: That is exactly what I have been looking for. I had hoped that it existed but couldn't find it. The remote control w/ discrete codes is PERFECT.
I just bought mine today. ( I won't get it for 5 to 10 days. ) I think there are a several possible solutions. These are a couple I thought of. 1. Get a switcher that allows you to conect several things to the same connection or 2. With the 5UY it appears that it has progressive scan built in. One reviewer said that it is difficult to tell if you are using a regular DVD and the units built n progressive scan or using a DVD player with progressive scan. That review also states that it also upscales vidio input from cable and satilite. At least for now I have no plan to buy a HDTV reciever. I want to see how well the upscaller works. I may decide not to get one. (I beleive there are only a few channels broadcasting HDTV at this time anyway.) But if I decide to go with a HD receiver then I wonder if I can connect my DVD to a diferent input, use the built in progressive scan with this and connect the HDTV receiver to the component video. After I get mine I will try different options to see what might work.
I will post if I come up with something that works well.
mgrissom, You can get BNC/RCA adaptors at Radio Shack. Also available at your local Radio Shack stores.
Thanks for the info I have orderd some.
I've owned the 42PWD4UY (essentially the same unit as the 42PWD5UY) for seven months. It's possibly the most satisfying electronics purchase I've ever made. Every time I turn it on it blows me away.
I took a year to audition everything I could (RPTVs, Direct-view CRTs etc.) and nothing had the magic the Panny plasma had. Guests agree too: every single person who sees it is floored by the picture quality on DVDs.Another plus is that the 4UY/5UY model is actually quite good at producing NTSC pictures - an area that many large screens of any technology tend to falter in. So, regular broadcast TV, if your feed is ok, can look quite good.
I have yet to see anyone express anything other than bliss when they finally received one of these things. I doubt you'd be disapointed.
