Hi Charles
I have not done extensive comparative research on different brands but am very happy with our Toshiba SD-K310. It has component video output, something you must seek for maximum picture quality. We looked at "Shakespeare in Love" the other night, an enhanced DVD, and the quality was stunning blown up on a 9 foot wide screen via a Barco projector & Barco quadrupler.
Sadly however most DVDs are not up to this standard with some coming through rather fuzzily.
Toshiba seem to get top reviews of other video equipment so appear to be up with the best. I have no idea how good it is as a CD player - never tried it.Happy hunting

Hi John,Yes the Tosh can produce good video, I use one in my bedroom system, but playing music CD's it's the same as the majority of DVD players, it sucks.
BTW I believe this model has been replaced by the SD-K320. Still has karaoke features (boo! hiss !)but with classier styling, illuminated remote and on-board Dolby Digital decoder. Last time I looked the 310 was still available though.
