Thanks for the help. I'm afraid the subwoofer problem isn't that simple. I am dealing with one subwoofer with a left and a right low level input. It may be that the low level inputs cannot handle the receiver's preamp out. The only thing I haven't tried is connecting the Y jack from the receiver's preamp out to the speaker-like inputs on the subwoofer. Isn't ancient technology fun?

That sounds rather suspicious to me that the subs don't get along with the sub out on your receiver. The second option, assuming your subs have speaker level inputs, would be to run a lead from the front speaker outputs and hook those up to the sub (your HT receiver's front speakers would have to be set to "large"). Otherwise, are you sure the subs are still in working order?
