Hi. I'm slowing figuring out the wiring on my surround sound system and I have a question. In order to get surround sound from my cable box, is it necessary to have the digital audio coaxial cable hooked up from the box to the receiver? As it is now, I have the audio left and right rca's connected from the box to the receiver and I don't seem to get anything from the rear speakers. Am I missing something or is that the way it's supposed to be? The receiver only has one digital audio coax jack so I'm using it w/ my DVD. I'd simply unhook it and try it but the cable is too short to reach from my cable box to the receiver so I figured I'd ask here to save myself the trouble of physically rearranging everything.
Thanks
Greg
Follow Ups:
You have to use the digital out from the cable box if you want 5.1 sound. Your receiver may be able to give pro logic with just the R&L inputs but you are cheating yourself.Go to www.parts-express.com and order a switchbox. Make sure that it will work with coax digital which has different impedance than regular coax hookups (parts express will know) and use this as an a/b swichbox when you want good surround.
The other option is to get either a new receiver, new cable box or new dvd with toslink outputs. Who knows, call your cable company and ask for a box with either toslink out or coax digital in and out (this will act as the switch box).

On a side note the drummer I play w/ here in Tampa is also named Joe Murphy. Featured in the "up and coming" column of Modern Drummer magazine a couple months ago. Fine Irish lad. : )
Just kidding. But yes, we Irish sure are fine lads -- drunk or sober. But mostly drunk, of course.:-)
By the way, I used to be a drummer. Believe it or not.
ps. Just in case your friend is me -- in another time, place and dimension -- tell him (or will it be me you're telling?) "Don't sell the drums!". The guy who wants to buy them ends up stealing them (all $4500+ worth). No joke. And if you see the buyer, shoot the MotherFucker for me. He skipped town a day after he stole my -- or would that be your friend's? -- drum kit. Never could find him. Do this for me and buy you a pint... no, an entire brewery, I will.
