Being the technological incompetent I am, I was wondering how important it is to buy a AVR with this option. I was all set to buy the Onkyo SR-800 AVR, but noticed that it does have this function. Given the rapidity of changes in surround sound technology, should I make sure that any AVR I buy comes with a RS-232 port?
Follow Ups:
RS232 ports are usually provided as a control port for very high-end control systems (ie. Crestron). With a Crestron super remote system, you can control EVERYTHING in the house - audio, video, lighting, heating, etc., etc. A few hobbyists wire their PCs into their components' 232 ports. They then load a comm driver and play around with "talking" with the various boxes at the other end. Me, I'd rather listen to them than talk to them.
