Yes, you would run audio cable from DVD into (say) AUX, and from VCR into Tape. You can at the same time run either DVD or VCR into TV audio input using Y splitters/cables, so that chosen unit can run on TV without using receiver.
Follow Ups:
Makes sense, but if I hook my speakers up to the receiver rather than the tv, I won't hear them unless the receiver is on, right? I can output from tv audio section to receiver, but then I am short one input (if dvd and vcr each have tape and aux.)
Sorry I missed you have only one pair of speakers.
So you are right, you will have to have receiver ON any time you want to get audio from any source.
If VCR and DVD are going into 2 inputs on receiver, you would have to use VCR to tune (change) channels or you won't have audio from TV. Or you can use audio OUT from TV into receiver, and VCR into TV RF input (you need A/V video input on TV for DVD).
You still have problem of connecting 3 video sources into one TV video IN. You need to do something about that too.
You can use RF input on TV for 1 VCR, and A/V video input for DVD. Second VCR can go into first VCR.You are getting to the point where you will soon need A/V receiver to connect and select these sources.
So:
DVD audio out into receiver in. (plays CD without TV)
DVD video out into TV video in.
VCR RF out into TV RF in. (VCR OFF to use TV for tuner)
TV audio out into receiver. (TV audio works with VCR OFF or ON)Speakers to receiver, and receiver is ON for all audio.
Second VCR, well... no use for it I guess except for recording some shaws while watching tape in first VCR, or recording in both VCRs at same time. So, second VCR by A/V into first VCR A/V, just so that you do not have to remove tape from second into first.
Thanks so much, very helpful. You're right about the HT receiver, but this one was freebie just waiting at the dump and until I get the $ together, it will have to serve. rmb
