Just a note to anyone looking at the Pioneer DV-45a.We just bought one based on a desire to hear SACD and DVD-A. The audio portion of the DV-45a is wonderful, we are very happy with the upgrade, but that deserves another post at a different time. This post is about an upgrade we did not expect.
Even though we were happy with our current DVD video performance, and did not buy based on a need to get better, boy were we wrong. I guess we did not know what we were missing. The video performance is nothing less than outstanding. Our 51" big screen looks better than we ever thought it could.
Fantastic sound, fantasic pictures. We just bought Diana Krell Live in Paris. Seeing this video with the sound coming out of our Magnepans really bought Dianna and Paris into our listening / video room! If you are looking for a cost effective, high quality sound and picture, consider this unit.
Follow Ups:
I suppose if you have a 5.1 system you probably haven't, but I get the impression that it doesn't work as well on the DV-45 as it did on the DV-440. It recesses the centered dialog so much that even DRC doesn't bring it back. It seems to add a lot of echo that the DV-440 Trusurround didn't.The DV-440 with Trusurround and DRC on sounds great on nearly everything. The DV-45A now sounds like the CLD-D604 Cinema III mode, and that isn't good. Maybe they've changed the circuit(or maybe something's defective)?
The CD playback is terrific, and plain 2-channel is OK on DVD's.
