depends mostly on how much power you want and/or need. Most of the time, especially for HT, a reciever is adequate. There are a few films where the audio demands are such that a largish separate amps might help. In fact, I think this may be more and more the case. O recently rented "Hart's War". More a suspense than an action adventure movie. However, the couple of explosions were totally over the top -- just about the most intense I've seen on a DVD. I have an EQ/RTA btween my reciever's pre-outs and a Carver amp. Not only were the explosions loud, the peak octave was 24Hz with 20Hz nearly as high. I doubt few reciever's could have dealt with the current requirments for that.
