I am seriously interested in purchasing the ONKYO DR-C500 DVD Player/Receiver.However, I will also be using it for two channel CD listening. I have a powered sub. Since this unit has a sub preamp output I want to run this into my powered sub. However, I have heard that if you are just listening to normal CDs in 2 channel direct mode, the subwoofer output will NOT be active. Is this true or will the receiver send the low frequency output to the subwoofer regardless of the setting?
Follow Ups:
Depends on Onkyo. Most of the receivers I have seen use bass management dependent on the settings for all inputs (including Phono for those that have it). In fact, I have never seen an exception, though I do not deal with that many receivers, and haven't any experience with the Onkyo.
I'm not familiar with the Onkyo, but I have a Yamaha receiver that provides subwoofer output if you choose the "small" setting for the main speakers, and gives you the choice of sending the bass to the subwoofer or to the mains. If the Onkyo is unable to do this, you can use the speaker level inputs to the subwoofer, which I assume it has.
Yes, this is true, since the signal coming from the source component(cd player) will be by-passing the A/D & D/A conversion, therefore by-passing bass-management, hence the reason why the signal will only be player through the main speakers.
